That soulful voice, that smooth beat, those clever lyrics: this song is a classic and it always will be. Hill’s vocal diversity is enough to make anyone’s eyes turn green with envy. Her voice just seems to bounce along the beat, buoyed by her own passion for the words – whether she is singing or rapping – I wish I could rap & sing like that (or just rap & sing in general). Almost gospel at times when the backing singers rise up and reiterate each point. This song has universal appeal, easy to listen to, and the lyrics are class, especially when you are going through that teenage point in life when you hate everyone.
Lauryn Hill provides an education.
