With Bonobo’s tour looming ever closer he offers up a shimmering summery mix of Henri Texier’s 1977 jazzy number ‘Las La-Bas’ the French native is a bit of a legend – on the original track he played every instrument, double-bass, flute, bombard, Fender-bass and percussion – and it seems Bonobo has found an excellent way to bring him onto the students’ dancefloor.
Bonobo gently teases out the ambiguous chanting and deep double bass, adding in subtle whirs and clicks and highlighting that ever-important cowbell. The abundance of subtleties becomes more apparent with each listen, I could happily havethis onat any time of the day. Much more than coffee shop jazz, Bonobo takes a classic and refreshes it for a new audience in such a way that completely respects the original.
