Something both ‘nextup’ and ‘throwback’ – last week Rappcats unveiled previously unheard material by legendary producer J Dilla. Created in 2001, ‘The Doe’ is one of three vocal tracks from the scrapped album ‘The Diary’, and is to be released on a new vinyl EP entitled ‘Give ‘Em What They Want’.
Although he’s best known for his revolutionary production, this time Jay Dee takes a stab at the mic and proves to be an able lyricist. ‘Straight with the cake about what they sell, they see me blazin’ hay and be high as a stealth,’ he raps over a bouncing West Coast beat and funky bass guitar.
Dilla may have died before his time, but his legacy will live on as one of hip-hop’s greatest contributors.
