Everybody loves a freebie and one as funky as this ticks all the boxes on a feel-good checklist. Originally this set was released five years ago on vinyl only but the ever-generous DJ Butcher has made these available digitally for free on SoundCloud to mark 5 years of his label, Chopshop. Chopshop Volume 1 was the first ever release on the imprint so it is a fitting way to mark the occasion.
Side A ‘Body and Soul’ remixes Crown Heights Affair 1980 single, creating a grooving, smoothing version of the original, perfect for these (hopefully) sunny afternoons to come. Next up is the fabulous ‘I Don’t Want to Change You’ which was famously mixed by Larry Levan for Paradise Garage series. DJ Butcher provides an altogether paired-back chiller version, uber jazzy and with a funky synth lick.
The best for catchiness has to be the penultimate track on the release, with the sunny female vocal taken to a looping level and the beat cranked up a notch. Unfortunately the added percussion does nothing for the track but this doesn’t make too much difference as the edit is kept afloat by the glittering vocal.
The Dynasty original released on renowned disco label Solar is a feel-good, light hearted take on R&B of the late 70s. DJ Butcher vamps up the sensuality, misfiring a little although this really refreshes the track for today’s modern audience as he heightens the bits which are often overlooked in Dynasty’s version as people focus on the hookable lyrics.
