The annual Red Bull Music Academy Tour hits Manchester from 16th – 19th April this year, bringing the likes of Omar S, Derrick May and JME to the rainy city for a weekend of debauchery and musical happenings, from movers, shakers and risers.
From the lecture with grime legend Skepta – moved to The Albert Hall due to demand – to workshops on hip hop with PRhyme (Royce Da 5’9″ and DJ Champion) and the eponymous Wax Works event on the final day, the annual RBMA events bring something a little different to the city which year upon year thinks it has seen it all.
Split into categories including Industrial City Sounds with Derrick May, Surgeon, Happa and more at Sankeys on 17th April, to address those with the need for something heavy; Deep South with Nextup favourite Omar S, rather fittingly at South Nightclub on the same night with Doc Daneeka and local favourites Meat Free in support. The next day sees (coincidentally, Record Store Day) RBMA Radio at Soup Kitchen with a stellar lineup of local heroes including Academy graduate Krystal Klear, Jon K, Jonny Dub, Danuka and Ruf Dug.
The final day sees Wax Works taking place at B.Eat Street, where DJs such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, PRhyme and Todd Terry each play an extraordinary set. The sets are limited as each DJ may only play records which they have purchased over the weekend in one of Manchester’s infamous (or not) record shops, an interesting concept…
